And the Winners Are…
The Alliance for a Greener South Loop celebrated the winners of the 2nd Annual Greener South Loop Awards this past week. South Loop buildings and businesses and one institution were recognized for their progress in charting the path for how all businesses and buildings will operate in years to come.
Winners fell into three categories: Green, Greener, and Greenest. 2010 recipients of this recognition are:
Green: East-West University (816 S. Michigan)
Green: Interchange Medical Wellness Center (1147 S Wabash St.)
Greener: Three Peas Art Lounge (75 E. 16th St.)
Greenest: Forth Group (22 E. Cullerton St,)
Green: Donohue Building Condominium Association (711-727 S. Dearborn St.)
Greener: State Place Condominium Association (1101 S. State St.)
Greenest: Dearborn Tower Condominium Association (1530 S. State St.)
Upon hearing the news that they had relinquished their “greenest” title to Dearborn Tower, representatives from State Place vowed to up the ante with even greener practices, in order to reclaim the title next year. They have their work cut out for themselves. Dearborn Tower’s application impressed the judges with the depth and breadth of the progress they documented. All agree that the competition benefits everyone, which, of course, is the whole point.
After the award announcements and presentations, event participants shared ideas about the value in “going green” in terms of both economic and community-building benefits. Also discussed were ideas about how to get the word out to other buildings and businesses about steps they can take towards greater sustainability. Look for “greenest practices” to be posted on our website over the coming months.
Thanks to the judges of this year’s award applications: Katie Kaluzny, LEED Green Associate and Associate Director, US Green Building Council and Joe Leamanczyk, Project Manager, Office of Campus Environment, Columbia College. Their time and expertise were much appreciated.
